There are two main types of small dogs, companion dogs, and toy dogs, they were both bred to fill different roles in their masters lives. Small dogs are just that, small, light weight but robust.

Many people often joke about a Small dog taking on a much larger foe in a fight and coming off the victor, this is not least due to its surprise attacks and its ferocity.

Small companion dogs were used to keep people company, often these were royalty or children who were left alone for the day, these dogs were bred to be loving, intelligent and caring but were also chosen for their skills as watch dogs, protecting their companions from attack.

Toy dogs were made to show off, they’re small dogs with a particular quirk or characteristic that makes them stand out from the crowd, there are several good examples, the most famous of which is the poodle, which is now bred world wide, and is prized everywhere.

Small toy dogs can be prized on their size, weight, hair or color. Many small dogs are bred for competition, the most esteemed of which is undoubtedly Crufts in the UK, which has an illustrious past and a promising future.

Small dogs are becomingly increasingly popular as pets through out the world, and there has been a decline in the working of larger dogs and hunting dogs.
