Toy Dogs Guide

Although the toy dog is cute and cuddly, they are a small companion or lap dogs. Many of the Toy breeds were bred for this capacity although some have been placed into this category due to their size.

Toy Dog Temperament

They should have friendly personalities and love attention. They do not need a large amount of exercise and some can be finicky eaters. They are intelligent companions but owners must be discretionary with their attention as spoiled dogs can become protective of their owners.

Ideally these dogs are extroverted companions and not untouchable ornaments. There are around 20 breeds in the Toy dog group and it is featured as an individual group in Crufts. These breeds include the poodle, the pug and the Pekinese.

Living Conditions for Toy Dogs

Small toy dogs can be kept living in a town and are very low maintenance with little requirements for exercise outside the house or flat and little food requirements also.

The grooming is simple for the smaller dogs but for the larger toy dogs, it is slightly more difficult. The general trend is that the bigger & hairier the dog, the bigger the problem.

Luckily for the toy breeds, providing companionship for humans has counted as suitable employment through the ages. This has ensured the survival of the breeds without practical skills, such as the Chihuahua, pug and Pomeranian.

Many toy breeds, such as the miniature pinscher, the toy poodle and the English toy terrier appear to be miniaturized versions of larger breeds. And despite their tendency toward yappiness, they are considered the best dogs for novice owners, though their fragility can make them less than ideal pets for families with small children.
